What was I Thinking?!

Last week I found a desk on Craigslist for only $20.  I was immediately taken with this desk.  It’s from the 1940′s with a cool design.  So I contacted the guy, he got back to me the next day with a very brief and uninformative note, and I didn’t hear from him again.  So I slightly harassed him with emails, insisting on my interest, because his ad mentioned he would be having an estate sale on Sunday… I didn’t miss want to miss out!

Can you see the potential? I can!

But when days passed and I didn’t hear back from him, I decided it must not be meant to be…. until he phoned me Friday night.  So the next day we headed out there, bought it immediately, and took it back home.

When we brought it inside, I realized this is how much my husband loves me…  he had noticed certain things that I hadn’t:  the drawer fronts are all different and are all coming off, all of the knobs are different, the desk is HUGE, and it was full of many spider nests….ewwww!  So I had to do cleanup immediately, to make sure we weren’t adding any new family members to our home… I’m pretty sure I vacuumed up a few generations of spiders!

on its side, waiting for a cleaning

can you see the nests?!

We really don’t have the space for me to do these projects, I don’t know why I get these crazy ideas in my head… I can’t stand a mess in the house, but right now we have this huge beast taking up our kids play room, and a table upstairs in the middle of the living room waiting for the varnish to finish curing, crafts all over the dinner table, and dishes all over the kitchen.  Oh, and piles of laundry to be folded….

I guess I should get off the computer and start cleaning house!

  1. What are your plans/ideas for this? I get crazy ideas like this too~glad to know I’m not the only one! Good luck with the desk!

    • thank you, I might need the good luck! LOL! I hope to make the desk quite masculine, most of it charcoal color, and the drawers different shades of charcoal… but with the condition of the drawer fronts, I might have to get a little creative! I might even try a home recipe for chalk paint!

  2. omg this totally sounds like something i would get myself into! I am forever bringing home projects from the local flea markets, which drives my husband nuts haha, super cute desk though! minus the spiders *eek*. Hope it turns out well!

    • LOL! Our poor husbands!! Thank goodness for the support system, instead of them making us feel like the nuts that we are! And thank goodness there’s so many of us out there in blogland, so we know we aren’t alone!

  3. Oh my! As soon as I seen this I was thinking Black spray paint with a gray wash after its dry. Then shims or pallet boards on the front of the drawers with black (or antique bronze) knobs and stenciled black numbers on the side drawers. Awesome! :)

    • oh, wow, you must be inside my head! Scary!! Stay tuned to see how it turns out! … I was also playing with the idea of red base, black wash over top, and paint the insides of the drawers red.

  4. LOL! I loved how you bugged the seller until he broke down and called you ;) Sounds like something I would do…

Good luck with this and all the suggestions sound wonderful!
