Chicken Wire and a Giveaway!!

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend?! We took it easy most of the weekend… Saturday was an outside day, catching up on some yard work…Sunday was a movie day, as both Jordan and I were under the weather… Yesterday us Canadians had an extra day off! Yay! So we took advantage of the day and went across the border to Linden, Washington again. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know this is one of my favorite places to spend a day. My favorite restaurant, my favorite antique store, a candy store next door to bribe the kids, and on a sunny day there is the most amazing playground in town. One day I will take pictures of the playground, it is quite something! Yesterday was a very rainy day however, so they kids got a little extra candy!

I’m excited to show you a frame I repurposed! It will currently be for sale, on my For Sale page, but I’m kind of humming and hawing on whether I want to keep it or not!!

this frame went from this:

To this:

I love the contrast of the bright yellow (Martha Stewart’s Cornbread) and the dark fabric.  And I am a sucker for leaf prints!

I don’t have good photos on how I did it, but I’ll try to explain along the way… this was my first time working with chicken wire though, so I was a little apprehensive, and too concentrated to think of taking pictures!!

again, a close-up of the frame... I took it all apart, and gave the frame a cleaning, sanding, and 2 coats of yellow... because I didn't think distressing it would give it much of an impact, being that the original color was white, I used "Distress Ink" to give it more depth and a distressed look...

...here you can see a bit of the effect the Distressed Ink gave to the yellow...

... I actually used the original picture to wrap the fabric around, and hot glued the fabric to the back...

before fitting the fabric board into the frame, I had cut a piece of chicken wire to fit in first, then fit the fabric board in next. I bent the chicken wire around the fabric board, and taped down the edges. I then finished off the back fully with a piece of cardboard, so the back is nice and covered....

Here is a photo of the chicken wire bent around the back of the fabric board, before I taped it...

...oh, and I forgot to mention I also stapled the chicken wire on the back, with a staple gun, before taping down the ends, just to make sure it all stays in place!...

...the back... in the "wrapping" process...

and done! it was a learning experience, but an addicting one, so I'm sure there will be more of these to come!!...

...so in case you don't quite understand how it works, the fabric is behind the chicken wire...

...the chicken wire sits far enough away from the fabric, so you can use clips of your choice, to clip your memos to the chicken wire...

...I chose to use clothespins, as they are adorable and inexpensive!...

I love how functional and sweet this piece is, and I love the rustic-ness the chicken wire gives to this piece...

If you LOVE it, be sure to check out my For Sale Page!!  I’d love to pass this on to another loving home, before it finds a permanent wall in our house to hang on!!

Thank you so much for reading!!  And by the way, my Facebook Page has reached 49 Likes!!  I’ve decided that for every 50 likes on my Facebook Page, I will hold a GIVEAWAY!!… I’m just not sure what the first GIVEAWAY will be yet!!  I better decide that before I get 1 more Like!  :)   Pass on the word, I’d love your help to help my Facebook Page grow!!

Thank you!!  xo, Leanne

It’s Magnetic!!

black14

The weather here has been SO amazing the past 2 days, it has been almost shocking!  People are out in droves trying to soak it all up.  We have had so much rain here since last summer, we take advantage of every sunny day we can.

On Sunday we had a fabulous day taking advantage of the sun.  We had a picnic on the beach at Harrison Hot Springs, went for a walk around the water (which takes incredibly long with 3 kids, loose shoe laces, runny noses, birds to chase, flowers to pick, and pictures to take).  Did some “window  shopping” at The Back Porch (coffee, antiques and collectibles), chased the chickens there and fed the goats, drove up to Hicks Lake and took a little walk, had dinner back in Harrison, and stopped by my parents for a quick visit and some ice cream!  It was just so great to get out of the house for a day!

Today I want to share with you a personal favorite of one of my creations… you can find this beauty on my For Sale page, which I just updated yesterday, by the way!

A Magnetic Board!

Oh, I so love this one.

I don’t have a very good selection of pictures on how I did it, but here’s a small glimpse.  If you would like a more descriptive idea, then my post of Turquoise Twins might help you out.

This is what I started out with:

this is what I started out with. I picked it up from a local thrift store. this was another one of those occasions when the cashier said "oh what a beautiful picture!!" When I explained what I was going to do with it, she didn't seem too impressed. :/

a close up of the frame...

I carefully took the whole thing apart....

...part of the process of taking it apart...

I used this little thingy to help pull the staples out...

... and the frame. I gave the frame a quick sanding a cleaning, then gave it one coat of graphite paint...

and that’s it for the “during” pictures… but I’ll try to explain my steps while you enjoy the “after” pics :)

...after my one coat of graphite, I noticed some of the original color was peaking through, and looked awesome. It didn't need any distressing, it was just perfect the way it was... I'm not sure if you can see it in this picture, but watch for it!...

the frame received a thin coat of clear Annie Sloan Wax for protection

for the inside of the frame, I cut a piece of sheet metal to size...

... measured the fabric an inch wider than the sheet metal... and this is where I began to mess up a little...

before realizing I was messing up, I carefully hot glued the fabric to the back of the sheet metal...

...when I turned it over to admire my work, I realized I hadn't removed the store code sticker from the sheet metal, and it showed through the fabric! Darn it anyways...

... I carefully pulled back the fabric, and began to try to peel off the sticker...

...luckily I didn't get too involved in this before I realized my other mistake...

and I clued in that I had fit the fabric pattern to run in the wrong direction!!...

... I was keeping the original hanging wire, so the frame was hanging horizontal... but at this point the fabric was vertical...again, a few curse words...

I ripped the fabric off, carefully started over again, checked it and double checked it before hot gluing the fabric to the back (which used to be the front, I remembered to turn the sheet metal upside down!)... I placed the sheet metal into the frame, and used the original picture, upside down, to fill in the void space. Taped it in place, and, sigh....

Ta-da!

…A gorgeous magnetic board, perfect for your kitchen or living room!  :)   Check the For Sale page for details, and otherwise, thank you SO much for reading!!

Family Frames – Before and After

frames, refinish

I remember the first time I entered my in-laws home, when I was first dating my hubby… and these pictures were the first things I saw,

Hubby in the middle, and his older brother and younger sister...

So cute!  When you see a cute picture of your current boyfriend like this, you know there could be some pretty cute kids in the future for the 2 of you!  :)

These pictures in these frames have always held spots of honor in my in-laws house…  a couple of weeks ago, my mother-in-law asked me if I could refinish the frames for her.  Here is their after shot!

Frames After!

What do you think??  I think they are pretty darned adorable!  the kids and the frames!  :)

...I distressed a bit around the outer edges to show the brown under, and along the inside to show some gold...

Dream Big

First I have a couple of ”business” things to mention :)   First, I participated in a cool idea put on by Heather from Inspire Me Heather.  She created “What I Like About Your Blog” which allowed us to sign up, and get critiqued by other bloggers.  I received some awesome feed back, so you will start to see a few minor changes to my blog… including a new Facebook Page!  I’d love for you to Like my new page, and you can find the ”Like” on my side bar (right on top of the follow me on Pinterest button *hint hint*).  Plus another feed back is that I don’t even have my name on my blog!  Not so personal!  It’s those little things you don’t even think of, that other people notice, so if you ever have some feedback you think would help make my blog better, I’d love to hear it!   …come to think of it, I think I forgot to mention my name on my Facebook Page!!  ~I’ll get to it soon!  My daughter is bugging me for the computer… she wants to play her sesame street games!!  (she’s 3!)

But first I want to write this post, I’m very excited about it, it was a bit of a challenge for me, just because things kept going not-quite-right, but I LOVE the way it turned out.

For Christmas I had pulled another niece’s name for Christmas, so along with a bunch of other things she asked for, I made her this:

I began with a piece of pine, did a coat of brown paint, and then an uneven coat of white paint...

I played with the fonts on the computer, and printed it off...

I colored the back of the quote with pencil, then traced onto the board...

I had read on a few blogs that they used black Sharpie felt to color in the words… so for convenience I gave this a try.  It worked fine, but when I sanded, all the letters smeared!  Although this look would be cute on the right piece, this was not the right piece for that look!…

...so I painted it over with a thin coat of white...

...this time I painted the letters with a graphite colored paint...

...I then sanded the whole thing, distressed the edges, and added brown paint to the corners...

...and promptly wiped it off to enhance the distressing...

..made my glaze - 1/2 brown paint, 1/2 water... and glazed the whole board (wipe on, wipe off)...

and ta-da!

Kitchen Hutch Tutorial – 2

Thanks for waiting!!  As my days are committed to my kids and everything that comes with them…the driving, cooking, cleaning,  driving, piano practice, driving, homework, more cleaning and more cleaning, and after bedtime is a quick workout, I don’t get around to doing my “fun stuff” till now, 10:00 pm.  So as long as you are patient with me, you will see I do get things done – slowly!  But I’m sure most of us are in the same boat, one way or another, and will forgive me!?

Continuing from last post, the Kitchen Hutch Tutorial, after the light sanding and wiping the hutch clean, I continued with 2 coats of white paint.  This again was paint we had here from past renovations and furniture painting.  I’m not even sure of the color name, but it is latex paint from the Rona Collection, with a silk finish.  One thing I have to say about this, is, invest in good paint brushes.  We have loads of brushes around here, but I have found out things don’t show up on walls the way they do on a loved piece of furniture… and brush strokes annoy me!  So if they annoy you too, put out the $$ for this step.

After letting the 2 coats of paint cure for 24 hours I got to distress!  Although this made me nervous at first, soon enough I was having a blast!  I started on the back as the guinea pig, and by the time I was on the front I had it figured out how much pressure I wanted to give, what angle to hold the sand paper at, and so on.  Many people use their electric sander for this, but I wasn’t ready to be that daring.  Plus, I didn’t want too much distressing, just enough to “rustic” it up a bit.  If you are wiser than me, however, you would wear gloves for this… I am waaayyyy too impatient to go searching for gloves when I do this, but there were times my fingers were burning!

distressing

Distressing

Just beware, this will make a big mess on your floor:

"Big Mess"

It completely grossed my husband out when I told him this is often what my floor looked like after I finished some client’s pedicures!  Remember to moisturize ladies!

The next evening I touched up my distressing job with the “sponge” sander (I have no idea what this thing is called)

"Sponge Sander"

and a wet rag

to smooth out any chipped edges.  I like the effect this gave also, it deepened the depth of it just enough to make it all a little more noticeable.

The whole time I was distressing the furniture though, I could hear my dad’s voice (who paints houses for a living) “why would you buy a perfectly good piece of furniture, just to paint it, then sand it off again?!”  Which did make me wonder, why is it attractive to have a piece of furniture that was meant to be distressed, but it’s not so attractive when it happens by accident on my countertops, wall paint, and window frames??

Distressed Window Frame

Back to the topic, next step was glazing.  This step made me extremely nervous.  Like I mentioned, I wanted this furniture to look somewhat rustic, but not “antique”, therefore, I had to be careful how much glaze to use, how dark to make it, and how much coverage to give.  After some research, I decided to use a craft paint, in “Burnt Umber” mixed with water, as it is very forgiving.  I played around with the measurements and the effects it gave, until I came up with this:

Glaze

Basically looking like melted chocolate pudding.  I wiped it on with a rag, and quickly wiped it off with a damp rag.  Some places I rubbed it in harder, some places I left it on longer, etc.  I worked it mainly in the areas I had distressed, plus I worked it into the grooves of the back, to accentuate them more.  Plus, on the two display shelves, I wiped on a very thin coat over the whole shelf, then rubbed off as hard as I could because I panicked!  But I like the way it turned out!  :)   Because the lighting in the kitchen isn’t exactly supreme at 10:00 at night, I had to wait till morning to really discover how it turned out, and I have to admit, there are a few spots I’m not proud of, (I might have forgotten to wipe off the glaze?!) but those are in the back and I can completely ignore them!

Glazed

Glazed

After letting this all cure for 24 hours, I followed with 3 coats of varnish.  For this I used Varathane Diamond Wood Finish, Interior Semi Gloss varnish.  This was the most boring step!  You can’t really see it go on, and for me, that’s boring!  After 3 coats I let it sit for a day, then gave a light sanding and wipe down… and took pictures… but as things go in our house, our camera is again not communicating with our computer, and it won’t upload the “after” pictures!  Arrgh.  My computer geek husband plans to pick up a special computer piece hopefully on Thursday, so hopefully on Friday I will have pictures to show you!

So, instead, I will show you that I do have my second bird finished for my bird mobile!

2nd bird finished!
