Fame On Friday #11

It’s Fame On Friday, because I heart my readers!!

Here we are again, another TGIF! I’m really looking forward to this weekend, we have a couple fun things on the schedule, including Jordan’s piano recital, a yard sale at the home of Elisa from Home Sweet Nest, and a birthday party for my sister and her daughter!! Busy Busy!!

Today I am pleased to introduce you to Melba! She has been following me since the beginning! Thank you Melba! :)

My 15 Minutes!

Everybody has their “15 minutes of fame” and I have already used mine up twice over (What? You haven’t heard of me?).  But I am so excited to be here with you for another “15”!

First I’d like to thank Leanne for the opportunity to appear here on her blog.  I joined the world of craft bloggers right before Christmas 2011 and am so excited to have ANYONE reading my blog.

My name is Melba, but I go by buggal1989 in on-line circles and chose the moniker “buggalcrafts” to be my crafty persona.  I was an Infection Control Coordinator (ICP) for 15 years before having to take a medical retirement due to fibromyalgia and other chronic illnesses.   ICPs are informally known as “bug ladies” because we track down “bugs” or germs.  And of all the “bugs” identified with infection control the ladybug is the one most ICPs take on as their alter-ego.  So ladybugs now appear as prominently in my crafts now as the bugs you can’t see with the naked eye were in my “former” life.

I am now a full time mother and me-me, a more or less crappy disorganized housewife (LOL), a reluctantly disabled person, and an invertebrate, mostly self-taught crafter. I have been crafting pretty much all my life. My mom would have said I was born with a book in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other as these two hobbies have bordered on obsessions (Ok, to be honest more than border!)! I might have been born with paint in my hair too IF I had any hair back then! I was as my older sister put it a “Bless its heart, poor little bald head” baby!

I remember many happy days of sitting under the sewing machine “making” clothes for my dolls while momma sewed clothes for us.  I don’t know if she didn’t have the patience or she just did not like to sew, but she did not teach even one of us three girls to sew!  In fact it wasn’t until recently that it even dawned on me that she hadn’t!  I took Home-Ec in high school of course, but I hated sewing and really did a number on what I tried to sew – I don’t think anything human could wear the blouse and pants I created!  Fortunately, I am talented in other crafts!

My mom always supported my craftiness.  We always had crayons and paper, the crayons might have been broken pieces and the paper torn open used envelopes (and they think up-cycling is new!), but they colored just fine!  Vacation Bible School every summer (twice in a good year) was always a time to make macaroni, baby food jar, or magazine page art.  Later my mom bought me macramé books and enough jute to tie around the world and I taught myself to macramé.  She also pretty much bought any other craft items I wanted to try.  I remember doing ceramics (ce-ram-a-king?) with her and her best friend every Friday night (or was it pestering her that I was bored until she gave in a put a paint brush in my hand?) as a kid.

However it happened, my mostly self-taught crafting skills grew apace until now there is very little I can’t do as good a job as a 5 year old can (LOL! That was an old joke between my mom and me!).  We’d run off to a craft show and something would catch our eye and we’d go “We can make that!” in unison.   The item would be under $30.  And we’d end up spending hours and $20 more than it cost ready-made!  Plus our tempers would flare and we’d blame each other for the dismal results before we’d finish.  So finally it became an inside joke with us.  We’d still said it every time we saw something we’d like (and we always liked the same things) and still spend more money doing it than buying it, but we’d do it anyway and laugh about it (MUCH) later!

Maybe of all the things I miss about my mother the time we spent crafting together is what I miss the most.  So I’d like to dedicate my craft blog to her memory.

I love almost any craft, but a few are just too “crewel” for me to do! And my sewing is “sew-sew” but I am heck with glue! I can’t say I’ve tried to make an outfit with glue YET, but it’s always good to have a goal!

I’d love to see you on my blog.  I think I have some neat things to share with you.  One thing I am doing right now is a series of posts on crafty uses for cookie cutters.  I have collected craft projects and tips for around 30 years and now have over 25 craft projects to share with you in the form of written and photo tutorials.  Most of the ideas are not unique to me (a few are) but I did not keep track of where I found them and most of them were long before craft blogs – heck, some of them pre-date the internet (and YES, I am that old!).

I have also combed the web looking for uses I did not have on my list yet and have found quite a few. If you Pinterest check out my boards 100 Plus Ways to Use Cookie Cutters for well over 100 pins about using cookie cutters in crafts and food (I might have a few duplicates, but not many) and a quick photo reference for My Cookie & Cookie Cutter Crafts.

I recently wrapped up the series with some extra ideas I have found posted on the web that I do not plan to do tutorials on at this time and have shared sites that I have found with great tutorials.  I still may do some of the projects that don’t have tutorials or photos at a later date

If you have any original cookie cutter craft ideas (or ANY that I don’t have) I’d love to hear about and see them.  I will feature your project on my blog, giving you credit of course or re-blog your post.

I am toying with compiling all the ideas into an e-book.  I’d love to hear your thoughts on that.

Thanks so much for stopping by.   Please leave me a comment as I’d love to pay you a reciprocal visit.

And thank you again Leanne for this opportunity.  You are really great!

It’s Fame On Friday, because I heart my readers!

Today’s guest is a personal friend of mine, our boys go to school together, and I am so happy to have her here today.  Heidi’s story and her blog are so powerful, and her way of writing creates such emotion in me.  I have commented to her before that her posts are often like devotionals for me, because they are just so insightful and so spiritual and beautiful… but I’ll let her tell you her story herself!  …some of you may have read this already, probably a little confused when you did, as I very accidentally sent her post out last week instead of just saving it!  But please take the time to read it again.

I don’t think anyone ever thinks cancer will happen to them. But when you’re 35 with 0 risk factors it really is the farthest thing from your mind. So when I felt a weird lump in my left breast around November 2010 I was sure it was nothing.

What’s the first thing you do the moment you feel anything weird happening to your body? You google it of course – which made me even more sure that it was nothing. Do you know that 80% of breast lumps are benign cysts or fluid filled sacs? The article with that information also suggested that I see my doctor anyway – just to relieve my fears. So I did — 2 months later (after all it was probably nothing – right?)

My doctor didn’t think it was anything to be worried about either, but sent me for tests anyway since I could feel it easily and point it out to him. Then one test led to another and then another. By the time I was at the biopsy stage I started to realize this could be something. That was when my doctor gave me some advice I’ll never forget. He told me to stay in the moment. Don’t look ahead beyond the next test or the next stage. I know he meant that medically – I was now moving through a set standard of care, a check list of sorts. If a mammogram shows anything you move to an ultrasound, if that is negative you stop, if it’s positive you move forward. But I also found it helpful for putting fear at bay. Until it was something it was nothing.

And when it was something – breast cancer, confirmed with a point form pathology that showed everything in black and white, I still had to stay in the moment. First surgery, then chemotherapy, then radiation and after that, hormone blockers. The list seemed long and it felt like an eternity until I would be done. At each step my husband and I paused to think, to pray about the next step, to make decisions, to check our decisions.

The last year has been difficult for me, my husband, our 2 kids and all our family. I blogged about it as much as I could. Each post became a way for me to figure out what exactly I was feeling. I would write it and then think – ‘yes, that’s how I feel.’ and then I could move on.

Right now I’m in the process of figuring out what my blog will become. I’m still in treatment, my last injection is August 9th and then I get my port-a-cath taken out, but I don’t think about cancer every second of every day like I used to and I want my blog to reflect that. I’m realizing I want other things to define me – but what exactly? I love all the DIY blogs like Leanne’s but is that me? Who am I after cancer?

That’s where I’m at right now over at my house for coffee if you care to take a look.

Thanks Leanne for featuring me on your blog. I’m honoured to be here!

Fame On Friday #9

sigh…. today is my baby’s first birthday.

2 months old

Of course I’m happy for her, but I am sad for me.  She is our last baby (God willing!), and she has been such a superstar of a little person, I couldn’t have prayed for a better baby (and trust me, I prayed!  With a pretty little red-head in this house needing so much attention, I needed a good baby!)  I’m not sure how we’ll be celebrating today, but we will be having a big party on Sunday!  Pictures next week!  :)

But onto today’s blogging topic…..

It’s…

Fame On Friday…because I heart my readers!!

Today’s guest is someone I think is absolutely adorable… I started following Michaela back when I began to notice her adorable personality, adorable cozies for tea cups, and her very adorable scarves… I’ve promised I will buy from her…I’m just waiting to see the perfect splurge for me!  Here she is!

Hi! My name is Michaela, I am the owner of a small shop called Buttons&YarnOHMY.

Which right now is just a small corner of the Etsy world. (http://www.etsy.com/shop/ButtonsandYarnOhMy).

I am a complete Knit –A – Holic, I almost always have a pair of needles with me and my house is bursting at the seams with skeins of yarn. I love fashion and designing knit accessories.

Along with knitting I love DIY crafts and house projects, which is how I first stumbled onto the Because I Think I Can blog. This is also my first year living on the farm and gardening; I’ve always had container gardens and been restricted to small patios and container gardens. My blog www.buttonsandyarnohmy.wordpress.com has a little bit of everything, this summer it’s mostly gardening.

A new lily from my garden that just bloomed this morning!

I also blog about a lot of my knit projects. I’m passionate about handmade and I like showing my customers that my items are truly handmade :)

Thanks so much Michaela!  It was fun having you here today!

And thanks for reading everyone!  I hope you enjoyed Michaela’s visit, and take a chance to visit her and get to know her a bit more!

xo, Leanne

Fame On Friday #8!!

That’s right, it’s Fame On Friday again!!  I am super-duper excited about today’s guest.  I “met” Anna  from “My Life And Kids” about 10 months ago… I was having a real hard parenting day, and ran into a post of Anna’s.  Unfortunately I can’t find that post now, but Anna’s post about why she is a stay at home mom made me cry…  and since then she has kept me laughing so hard I cry!!  This girl is seriously funny, very honest, with a little bit of devilishness about her.  I imagine my Anna will grow up to be a lot like this Anna!  I am flattered Anna reads my blog, so here she is!!  Enjoy her and be sure to check out more of her blog!!

Hi, my name is Anna, and I blog at My Life and Kids. I’m super excited to be here today!

Leanne and I have been blog buddies for what seems like forever, and I’m always inspired by her projects! And our kids are fairly close in age, so I always feel like we have a lot in common.

My Life and Kids

I had three kids in three years. Then I quit my job, moved to the suburbs, bought a minivan and started wearing mom jeans. In my spare time, I blog about all the ways I’m finding the fun in life and motherhood.

A Few of My Favorite Posts:

Sometimes I Get a Little Crafty…

Summertime Fun

I wrote an eBook called 25 Ways to Have More Fun at Home. It’s full of fun things you can do with your kids – which might be a lifesaver this summer!

25 Ways to Have more Fun at Home

It’s free for you to download – just like My Life and Kids on Facebook and click on the eBook tab to download your free copy.

And on Wednesdays, I co-host Finding the Funny. It’s a great linky party – where you can link up your old or new posts. If they make you laugh, they’ll make us laugh!

I hope you’ll visit My Life and Kids and say hi!

Thanks for having me, Leanne!

Thank You so much, Anna!!

Be sure to check out her ebook, it is fantastic!

BTW, if you receive my posts by email, and are having problems seeing Anna’s picture links, please click on the title of this post, and read it directly from my blog page. You don’t want to miss out on Anna’s links… my personal favorite is her ric-rac ring, LOVE IT!

Thanks so much for reading!! Have a wonderful long weekend!!

Fame On Friday #6!

It’s… Fame On Fridays! … because I heart my readers!!

Today I am introducing you to Beth from Chic Envelopments! Beth found me first, but I have really enjoyed following her back… I know nothing about sewing, so I don’t often enjoy sewing blogs, but this woman blows me away with every post! Enjoy her! :)

As the youngest of four children, I’m used to hand-me-downs.

Since I’ve started refashioning, hand-me-downs have now become a treat!

Not only do the thrift stores supply my new habit, but my friends have been joining in and donating to my obsession.

Here’s a t shirt that was in a bag from Jakkie.

Now let’s get this party started!

I just had to show off my 75 cent thrift store shoes.

Here’s a few other ideas for styling your new shirt:

This was a fun and easy refashion. Think I’m going to make one in every color!

If you try this, I’d love to see pictures!

Beth

Thank you so much Beth! And thank you to everyone for reading!  I would love it if you would take some time to head over to Beth’s at Chic Envelopments and give her some love!  :)
